Masche is so underrated by some people because of his height. But the fact is that he's the real leader in the defense and not Pique. Pique is like half a leader, he wants to be the man, but he's just not aggresive enough for it and doesn't constantly and precisely communicate in situations when it's needed. Masche is the one who really is using his verbal skills to do so and also showing his strength so that it reflects onto the team and especially the whole defense. You see when Mathieu replaces him and stands next to Pique, then miscommunications happen more often because Pique hasn't got thát quality in handing out orders rapidly and precisly, but he's gaining it tho. Mathieu also isn't much of a leader at this point and if some ppl say he is, then it's only half at most. Mathieu half and Pique half won't work versus difficult opponents that press alot.
Vermaelen seems to be identical to Pique aspectwise from what he was in Arsenal, but Pique is much better than him in those aspects. So I don't think he'll be able to replace Masche at all and two of the same type of CB's in the defense just doesn't work. Masche is the only one out of the CB's who shows balls vs strong opponents. he's like an image of Puyol at this point. Also Bartra is basicly the same type of player as Pique and Vermaelen, so that makes 3 of the same kind even.
