On the 22nd October in 1899, in Catalonia, Joan Gamper placed an advertisement in Los Deportes, declaring his wish to form a football club.

11 players, from many different countries, responded and FC Barcelona was born. During its early history, the club evolved into a symbol of Catalan identity and a great source of local pride.

However, during General Franco’s rule, the Catalan identity of the club suffered. Franco demanded unity across Spain, banning the Catalan language, the Catalan flag, the Catalan crest and any regional nationalism.

Under Franco, they even had to adopt a Spanish name, Club de Football Barcelona. For many Catalans, Barcelona’s matches represented an oasis of freedom during years of fear, misery and repression.

The stadium was a place where Catalans could come together and celebrate their culture, despite Franco’s oppressive rule. After Franco’s death in 1975, the club was able to return to its original name and as Spain transitioned to a democracy, FC Barcelona readied themselves for their own presidential elections.

Josep Lluis Nunez was elected president of FC Barcelona in 1978 and remained in his post until the year 2000. During Nunez’ tenure, club legend Johan Cruyff would lead Barcelona to their first ever European cup victory, in 1992 at Wembley.

In the team that day was a young Pep Guardiola, a Catalan and a product of Barcelona’s flourishing youth academy, La Masia. After he retired as a player, Guardiola would return to Barcelona as manager in 2008. He continued Barcelona’s policy of promoting youth players while leading the club through the most successful period in their history.

With a team including Lionel Messi, a player considered by many to be the best ever, modern day FC Barcelona is a footballing superpower, with supporters all over the world.
