ESPN FC’s Sid Lowe joins Gab Marcotti and Julien Laurens to discuss Barcelona’s proposed 70% wage cut across all playing staff and why this could put a majority of Barca’s staff in a financially precarious situation. Marcotti also argues that the worst case scenario for the Catalan giants is a 25% loss of their season’s budget, asking do they need to do this at all?

In this whole paycut fiasco at Barcelona, I think many people in the comments are missing some key information. The players have agreed to a paycut, so that’s not the issue. The issue is that the club wants them to take a 70% pay cut, when FIFA is recommending around 50%. And, this is just an educated guess, I assume that the players don’t have any trust in the way the board will utilise the money. Especially with the rumours that they are preparing a £150m offer for Neymar, and a potential £100m for Lautaro Martinez. Therefore, if these rumours are to be believed that extra 20% above FIFAs recommendation will probably be used to try and purchase these players. From my perspective it does look like the players just don’t trust the board with the financial side of things and probably think that the money will go to waste. Even the Barcelona basketball team has refused the 70% paycut.

Before anyone says anything, some of these players have already donated millions in the fight against COVID19. So it’s not like they are being greedy. I would take a 70% paycut at any other top club (if I was a footballer), but not for Barcelona and their board. They just can’t be trusted!

why pay if u dont play

Lets not forget that Lionel Messi is taking €500.000 each week while doing nothing. With that kind of business model, it's only matter of time before Barca went bankrupt.

Real M says:

I think if Barca or any other club have a direct and respectful dialogue with the players, most will accept a pay cut.

But if the players feel they are run over and have no say, regardless of what club or kind of employer, people will get angry.

rahul gautam says:

Shouldn't the board take the pay cut, those incompetent multi-millionaires run the finances of the club into the ground and when they get any opportunity whatsoever, they basically extort money from their employees to fund operations in the future.
