This is the actual FC Barcelona Academy Benjamin A (’02 birth or closest to U-10) team from La Masia in Barcelona, Spain…the very same academy that gave rise to Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas and others. This match includes current young star Ansumane Fati (#10) who is worth keeping an eye on over time. I have also posted on my video page a near full game video of the Alevin A (’00 birth) FC Barcelona team playing a local opponent. That team includes the 1st American player ever at FC Barcelona Academy, Ben Lederman, who is also making strides recently at the U-14 Mens National team in the U.S. Separately, there is a video of a state cup champion and highly ranked national U12 team playing in NJ for comparison purposes.
This full game video is in 4 parts or quarters of a 60min. 7v7 match on a 1/3 size field and shows the FC Barcelona Academy team playing a state cup champion, Barcelona USA, from southern California. FC Barcelona is in the home striped blue-red jersey and I believe this team is BETTER than the Alevin A team from the other videos, age adjusted, that won the MIC Cup. The California state cup team is in the black away jersey. Note the California team is called Barcelona USA, but they are NOT a U.S. based academy of FC Barcelona. It is confusing and despite an 8-0 defeat on this day, 3/27/12, I believe their coaches are excellent and hail originally from Jordi Vinyals in Spain who is currently coaching the Juvenil A (U18) squad to an arguably better season than the Barcelona 1st team who are off to a record start.
For those of you thinking how do I get a chance to play FC Barcelona Academy, well…if you are under 10 and live in the LA area Barcelona USA is an option. There is also a nationwide US Club Soccer program called id2 that selects kids to go play the likes of FC Barcelona Academy and more. They took a U-14 boys team (not just pre-teens) to play FC Barcelona about a month earlier than this match and the US team won 3-1. That team was, by the way, represented in part by players from the same academy, PDA, shown in the other video of a different state cup team on the east coast. To those who say the USA doesn’t have the players and cannot learn to play better, smarter soccer, I say nonsense!
