ESPN FC’s Don Hutchison, Craig Burley, Steve Nicol and Gab Marcotti discuss Lionel Messi’s continued “genius” from set pieces following his pair of free kick goals vs. Celta Vigo. Hutchison still rates Diego Maradona as his best player of all time, but says Messi is quickly changing his mind. The FC crew also compare Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s impressive scoring rates after age 30 and debate if Messi is the best free-kick taker ever after he became the top set-piece scorer over the last 10 seasons in Europe’s top five leagues.

Munther K says:

It’s not a debate, it’s a fact, Messi is the goat of the game. Numbers are the proof for those who like to think logically. Weak arguments were presented, Messi’s longer life on the pitch is due to his dedication to the game and the reward is more time, another angle that proves he is the goat, almost perfect, but no man ever was. Yes the ball Messi hits today is different than what players used to play with than today, but even with this new ball Messi plays with, no one beats him with it for the past 10 years. Yes also the whole game today became more tactical than ever with more rules which makes it a harder game than In Peles or Maradonas times, yet still Messi beats them all. For God’s sake, just admit it and be a bigger person.

RS A says:

Fun Fact: Messi takes all the freekicks…

Oneil Dixon says:

It’s funny how since Messi’s Freekicks number has gone up and he started scoring them on a regular it becomes such a great thing but when Ronaldo was doing it was all angles and distance it was okay it’s just a free kick … Everyone try to play down Ronaldo achievement when he is leading in the department but as soon as Messi does it .. It’s all magical and it’s the greatest achievement

Magda Avila says:

He’s the ?

guly says:

Messi have a playstyle that will suffer more than Ronaldos. Ronaldo have been a goalgetter the last 10 seasons. He dont drible as much hes just been an elite finisher. Messi has been dominating but his playstyle requires him to be explosive, fast, etc. At least to score as much as hes been doing. But now this season, its very clear to me. He understand thats not possible, so he have been focusing ALOT on freekicks. This is a way he can keep scoring alot of goals, regardless of his physical peak starting to decrease. Hes been almost like a machine on freekicks lately, everything goes either in, or very close to in.
