ESPN FC’s Shaka Hislop, Steve Nicol, Craig Burley and Julien Laurens debate the harshness of Ousmane Dembele’s red card in Barcelona’s 4-0 win vs. Sevilla. Nicol calls Dembele “brainless” and “deserving of all the trouble he’s getting,” after the France international made the comment just minutes before the full-time whistle. Burley and Hislop don’t think the punishment fits the crime and say that referees have to put up with a lot worse than being called “very bad.”

van Yama says:

ohh cmon, are that old man and everyone who supports the ref going to honestly say that this referee isnt anti-catalan? This ref is the most anti-catalan referee ive seen in the spanish league.

Somali Sheeko Iyo Xaraabo says:

is true is very bad and bad

Erick Gomez-Mendez says:

Sometimes the ref needs to hear this

Rigoberto Largaespada says:

Is it any wonder why Steve is the one siding with the referee? Ousmane Dembélé was certainly not smart in making his decision, but Steve calls him brainless and a buffoon, which to me is just ridiculous. He said 4 words to the referee, which is far less than what some other players have yelled at referees in past occasions. Note the fact that this is in fact a very experienced referee and Ousmane Dembélé had already been booked. Sure, you can book a player at your discretion if you believe he deserves it(I don't), but why is it that the black player is the one that gets it worse. Pretty much the whole Barça squad was heated and probably saying things at the ref, even Sergio Busquets and Gerard Piqué got yellow cards, but why is that Dembélé(the black player) is the one that gets a 2 match ban for nothing other than words and not even a hint of a hostile attitude. Cristiano Ronaldo got a 5 match ban for pushing a referee, he actually pushed the referee and even then people said it was exaggerated. Dembélé barely even spoke, I just feel he's being targetted for being black which is a shame to have to witness in this day in age. Also notice that Craig said Dembélé had assisted Suarez's goal when, in fact, it was Nelson Semedo that assisted him… the only two black players in the starting 11. I think the reason why Shaka defends Ousmane so firmly is because he knows that this treatment is unfair, unwarranted and truly disappointing that these acts of racism still happen and it happens a lot with fans, which is terrible, but when it is an authority figure that acts this way it just feels like discriminative oppression.

Jens Christian Aanestad says:

Dembele did nothing but telling the truth

Robin Lustig says:

Dembele is totally right. This referee is very bad. His biggest problem is to be fair. He ruled out clear Barca goals against betis seveille three or four years ago. These crucial points prevented Barca to become champions

Tawonga Chenga says:

Steve is dumb

Javion Green says:

I’m sorry but referees have to be able to take some harsh criticism in this game. Seriously

Stephen Cooper says:

No didn’t deserve it . Referee would be giving them out a lot more if it’s the standard. If this is double that whinebag Ramos cardcount over the years .

Dr. Dennis Chung says:

ITS all RACISM…
Ref: Red card
Messi, Pique, vidal : Threatens his family
Dembele: 'Your very bad"
Ref: Racist

Hamoonga Hansende says:

yeah the ref was not just bad but very bad
Dembele is on point

Lit Papi says:

This has happened to me before. They scored an unfair free kick and I just told myself “why do we always get the worst referees” and got a straight red

rj e says:

You can have an opinion it's not tiddlywinks he didn't insult him he didn't say he was cheating just very bad

Kristian Santosa says:

If I were there as Barca player, I would tell the referee "Dembele was not talking to you, he was just rehearsing his Spanish response in case some stupid refs decided to give him red card out of nowhere. Certainly you can't give someone a red for rehearsing in his second language"

Fabián Matas says:

Mateu Lahoz is a soccer terrorist known by his infamous ego to call for attention.

Kennedy Luunzwe says:

Steve nicol is a piece of trash walking ?

Jordan P says:

Yash Joshi says:

Steve Nicol probably voted for Brexit.

Jorge Belmana says:

Is because protecting Real Madrid for el clásico coming again corrupt referees against
Barcelona. Oh boy oh boy!! I smell FEAR?

Rukesh Maharjan says:

We must also consider a point that when you do referring in such a way ( vs sevilla ) then it is obvious to have frustrated just like dembele

Jesse Ordonez says:

The ref was terrible. It’s the truth. The ref was childish by showing a red card to Dembele for saying that he’s bad at his job. A yellow was more than enough.

Nicolas Sanchez says:

AYE! NICOL! YOU SIR, ARE EXTREMELY BAD…. a moron at best.

RICHIE AGYEMANG says:

Nicole should STFU and stop the silly bias. The ref was bad indeed and those yellow cards bullshit. Stop messing the game for us.

Otumfour Kojo Agyemang

Myrdin says:

Lahoz is probably the worst referee I have ever seen. This guy is a clown, and should have been banned from the game a long time ago.

masauso banda says:

I hurt this reef. He is the waste reef in Spain. Check his games in Spain football. He is a very BAD REEF. Dembele knows that even Messi went to him after the game.

sinless sunny says:

Red card to Steve nicol

Emmanuel Niamkey says:

Stop it you Guys.. then Ramos Who insults Refs on Daily basis should have black cards then .. but he always get away with that.. That stupid ref just wants to be the show man anythimes he is on barca games.. that's all.
