Because their teammates don't have the same values as them, because they rely too much on these two. They're both good leaders in their own way. Messi is charismatic and inspires by his gameplay, Ronaldo is the leader that gives the motivational speech. It's their teammates that let them down. I don't know if I'm being biased but I think Messi's Argentine teammates let him down more than Ronaldo's Portuguese teammates. Portugal without Ronnie beats France 1-0. Argentina without Messi lose 6-1 to Spain.
